The first element to consider is how do you plan to use your computer. If you are going to be using it for fast and furious video games, then you should consider getting a motherboard that will support a lot of memory and a very fast processor. Video games require and push a systems performance envelope, so getting the right motherboard and CPU for this application is very important.

  On the other hand, if you are going to using business applications like word processing, spreadsheets and surfing the net, then you can utilize a motherboard with a less robust set of specifications.

Also, since retailers can "cut you a deal" on a bundle rather than separate units, it is usually less expensive to buy them together. Trust me. If you are building a computer for the first time or you are not comfortable buying separate parts for the motherboard and CPU, get them bundled together.
